The Hidden Kingdom Trek, Upper Mustang

The Upper Mustang trek is the ultimate gateway to the mysterious world of the old Buddhist kingdom of Mustang, also called Lo. Once forbidden and isolated from the rest of the world for decades, the area was able to evolve within its own distinctive culture and rich traditions closely tied to Tibet. This moderate, lesser-known trek passes through one of the driest regions of Nepal and provides spectacular mountain scenery. Mustang—commonly referred to as ‘Upper Mustang’—is an arid river valley that runs north-south off the upper corner of the Annapurna Circuit. Both culturally and geographically, it’s more similar to Tibet than Nepal and used to form its own kingdom, with its capital in Lo Manthang (the turnaround point of your trek). Lying in the rain shadow of the Himalaya, and officially one of Nepal’s restricted regions, this trek is known for its desert beauty and harsh, cliff-faced landscapes.

Upper Mustang, the high-desert headwaters of the Thak Khola, was closed to foreigners until 1992, and still retains much of its medieval Tibetan culture – even if its raja has now officially been deposed and Chinese goods are now pouring across the border via a new road (the border is closed to foreigners). Permits to trek in Upper Mustang are expensive (USD 500 per person for 10 days) and can only be done with one of the local guides.  Experience homestays and enjoy some fabulous cuisines with the warm hospitality. The restricted area officially begins at Kagbeni, and most visitors fly in and out of Jomsom, just a half-day’s walk to the south. The trek from there up to the high, desert valley of the Thak Khola to Lo Manthang (3840m), the lofty, walled capital, it’s about few days’ walk, past wind-eroded cliffs in astonishing shades of sand, rust and grey. Truly the answer to the grand canyons, trekking into Upper Mustang is a rare and privileged opportunity, where you can experience the true life of the real mountain people of Nepal. In many ways, trekking into the Upper Mustang Area is similar to trekking in to Tibet, which geographically it is a part of.

Mustang, a land where the soul of man is still considered to be as real as the feet he walks on, while the land itself is almost treeless, barren landscape with a countryside similar to Tibetan plateau, but where beauty and happiness flourishes, in spite of hardship. This was part of the Tibetan Kingdom of Gungthang until 1830’s. The fabled medieval wall city of Lo Manthang, unofficial capital of Mustang still remains a kingdom within a kingdom its full of culture and religious heritage.
